To The residents of Highley Parish:
As you have no doubt heard, Shropshire Council are consulting on proposals to
close some of the household recycling centres within the county and also make
financial savings by charging residents for green waste collections.
We, at Highley Parish Council, are deeply opposed to any closures that will have a
negative effect to the residents, especially the proposed closure to the Veolia site
based in Bridgnorth. If this site is to be closed, the nearest recycling centre within
Shropshire would be the Shrewsbury site. This would mean a 54 mile round trip for
residents of Highley, we feel the this is an unacceptable distance for residents to be
expected to travel to dispose of their green waste and other household recycleables.
We fear it could also lead to a rise in fly tipping, of which Highley has already been
subject to an increase of, and of dumping of green waste. The clean-up cost is
expensive due to not only the cost to remove the waste but also to investigate and
potentially prosecute offenders.
Please be assured that Highley Parish Council is exploring all avenues to persuade
Shropshire Council to rethink this proposal plan and to find alternatives to prevent
the proposed closures and consider the public opinion on changes to green waste collections.
